The article emphasizes that Ukraine is undergoing a process of transformation of the educational sector with the aim of gradual integration of national higher education into the European educational space. It is noted that the current state of development of the education system and the labor market requires higher education institutions to quickly take into account new directions and changes in society. The necessity of introducing autonomy in domestic institutions of higher education is substantiated. Particular attention is paid to the principles and criteria for the implementation of university autonomy. The results of an online survey of scientific, scientific and pedagogical workers and students of higher education regarding the expediency of expanding institutional autonomy were analyzed. Our research showed that the level of implementation of autonomy in Ukrainian institutions of higher education is insufficient. The concept of university autonomy is defined, which is determined by the ability of a higher education institution to independently conduct the educational process, scientific research, recruitment of students, and personnel.
