The International Organization UNESCO defines media education as a priority area for cultural and pedagogical development of the 21-st century and recommends its implementation in the national curricula of all countries of the world. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to analyze and characterize the process of formation and development of media education in the world and in Ukraine. Media education aims to teach to understand, analyze and critically understand the information received, determine the origin of information sources and media texts. The result of media education is the formation of a certain level of media literacy, which will help to exist in the information space. Media education is actively developing in many countries of the world, such as Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, Russia, USA, France, etc. Today in Ukraine there are already some theoretical developments and practical achievements in the context of media education development. Adoption of the Media Education Concept in Ukraine is the basis for the development of media education in general. She provides for the organization of events (seminars, conferences, projects), which is a practical step in her implementation. There are several centers of media education development in Ukraine: Kyiv (Institute of Higher Education, Institute of Social and Political Psychology of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences in Ukraine), Kharkiv (Kharkiv N. Karazin National University) and Lviv (Institute of Ecology Media of the Lviv I. Franko National University ). In addition, media education courses are part of many curricula at several higher education institutions However, media education should become an integral part of secondary and higher education and, as a result, actively embedded in the educational process at the national level.
