The article deals with the essence and potential of STEM education, the implementation of which is important for the training of specialists of the new generation and rapid development of our country. On this basis, it is necessary to improve the education system of Ukraine, focusing on the leading countries in the world, which operate STEM programs at the state level. The essence, concept, origin and history of STEM education are revealed as a new trend in the history of human education. Attention is drawn to the fact that successful modernization and integration into the world educational space of the Ukrainian education system requires the study and implementation of educational innovation experience in the leading countries of the world. The purpose of the article is to identify the significant potential of the new STEM educational area, which is a key component of the education systems of many countries, to reveal the significance and to identify the existing trends that are being designed in Ukraine for its implementation. The article covers the emergence of the acronym “STEM”, reveals the meaning of the word and the history of development of this innovation. STEM education has been found to have scientific, interdisciplinary, cultural, educational and social significance, aimed at finding out the nature, development trends, theoretical foundations, organizational models, technologies of practical implementation in educational institutions. In order to increase interest in understanding the importance of STEM innovations, the main advantages of this area and the main problems of STEM implementation in the domestic education system have been identified.
